This is a precursor to National Youth Leadership Training, NOT a replacement. Troop 2020's JLT utilizes the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) manual developed by Scouts BSA for training troop youth leaders.
This is an activity to get your young men and women prepared and focused on advanced Twin Arrows NYLT training. This is an invitational event for those scout leaders to send their best example of their scouts working towards leadership positions in their respective troops. We encourage both boy and girl troops as well as venture crews to join us.
Initial prep work starts with 2 separate Monday troop meetings where the scouts will meet their JLT patrol members and work on a Patrol theme, Patrol flag, a Patrol yell, Patrol skit, Patrol song and patrol competition meal.
Unlike the classroom model of ILST, Troop 2020 has built a dedicated weekend of activity covering all facets of ILST tempered with essential scout skills in an outdoor setting. During the weekend the scouts will enjoy instructional modules emphasized with scout games teaching group leadership, team dynamics, personal responsibility, personal integrity and embracing diversity through inclusion. In addition to these leadership skills, Scouting skills such as camp cooking, cleaning, knots and rope management, campfire etiquette, backpacking, and first-aid will also be covered by both seasoned JLT scouts and trained adult scout leaders.
To keep the weekend lively the patrols will enjoy regular competition for a chance to win the Top Scout award, given to only 1 scout, as well as the award for Top Patrol. Past awards for Top Scout have included Ham Radio gear and PowerPot/Stove cook kits. Top Patrol awards have included customized folding knives engraved with their initials and JLT weekend and ultra light weight backpacking stoves.
If you and your troop would like to find out how you can join us for this weekend, please call the scoutmaster, David Wieda @ 817-Seven-Nine-One-3456, and we'll be happy to get an invitation out to you.
Thanks for helping Scouting grow!!
